MERIDEAN, Wis. – It’s difficult to believe the sleepy little town called Meridean was twice a bustling metropolis. Its first incarnation was on an island in the Chippewa River; its second was nearby south of the river.
What was once the Jackson Brothers Garage still stands. Albert and George Jackson were owners of the service station in new Meridean. They had one gas pump and a service bay operating between the 1930s and 1966.
The Meridean Mill on Happy Island produces shingles. When the mill closes, old Meridean moves -- leaving eight farmers behind.

In 1960 a group of women prepare to cross the Chippewa River on the Meridean Ferry. A stationary power unit provided energy to cables used to propel the ferry. Chris Swenson is the operator.
