Many of us remember the excited anticipation of opening day of our county fair. Some of us entered animals and projects into competition for ribbons and prizes. We looked forward to grandstand shows like tractor and horse pulls. The rides, games and lights of the midway beckoned. The smell of fair food seemed to scent the summer wind blowing across farms in the neighborhood. And because the Chicago and North Western train stopped taking passengers in the 1970s, a few of us even traveled once or twice by Greyhound bus to the big state fairs in Escanaba, Michigan, and in Milwaukee or St. Paul.
