Some foods enhance the taste of others even though they are not that impressive to see. A cucumber is one of these. Cucumbers (Cucumis sativus) are known as a vegetable, yet it is technically a fruit in the same family as melons and squash. This edible fruit develops from a male and female blossoms on the plant and contains seeds or can be seedless. New varieties may produce only female flowers. There are three basic varieties such as slicing, pickling and burpless, yet some may be both. They will differ in size, shape, and color. Colors may be all green, striped, or yellow green. They can be long is size, short or round. The plants may be grown from seed. The largest known cucumber was 67 inches long and weighed 154 pounds!
