FOSTER CITY, Mich. – Along the border between Wisconsin and Upper Michigan it’s easy to cross back and forth over the state line without noticing. On both sides most farm fields are small. Most forests are large. There are not any mansions in the small towns and or at the crossroads that were once small towns. The transient wealth of minerals extracted decades ago and forests long cut over is gone. That wealth never stayed long enough to take hold. The folks who have lived a hard-scrabble life here through the centuries have been resourceful and resilient – or they have moved on.
