For many of us, it’s the time of year to say, “Achoo!” Of course, it’s partnered with watering eyes, runny noses, itchy throats and inner ears, stuffiness and fatigue. I can think back to the time of harvest when I was a young girl, and my older cousin Bob dealt with severe allergies. His job was driving one of the grain trucks along with my other cousin Dan and my brother Randall. This was in the late 1970s and early 1980s when there were limited allergy treatments available. I remember him sitting inside the sweltering hot truck cab, windows rolled up, wearing a hooded sweatshirt with the hood up over his head and drawstring pulled so tight one could barely see his face. It was an attempt to minimize exposure to the grain dust and chaff that triggered his allergies in the middle of wheat fields in north central Montana during the hottest time of the year. He had to be miserable. Decades later, I usually text him a photo of the ripe wheat fields during harvest and jokingly ask, “Does this picture make you want to sneeze?!”
