According to family history, Adam Kuntz first arrived in Custer, Mont., around 1926. A World War I veteran and son of Russian immigrants, Adam left North Dakota on the hunt for better opportunity, which he ultimately found in the nutrient-rich soil of the Yellowstone River Valley. He settled on a little place about five miles west of town, and leaning into his eastern European heritage and know-how, he first planted sugarbeets – a crop that a century later still pays the bills for the Kuntz family.
