A bell and cannon are affixed to the conning tower of the USS Cobia. In addition to torpedos, the vessel was armed with a 40mm cannon, a 20mm cannon and .50-cal. machine guns. The Officer of the Deck can conn, or control, the vessel from the tower while the submarine remains on the ocean's surface.
The USS Cobia, a submarine constructed for use during World War II, floats in the Manitowoc River.
The USS Cobia, constructed and launched in 1943 in Groton, Connecticut, is more than 300 feet long. It sank Japanese warships during tours of duty in the Pacific. The submarine is similar to the 28 submarines built during the war in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. It was in 1970 brought to Manitowoc as a memorial to submariners.
Steep steps lead from the deck into the interior of the USS Cobia.
A banner identifies a submarine moored in the Manitowoc River.
Old Glory waves from the stern of the USS Cobia during a misty spring morning in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The submarine is moored beside the Manitowoc Maritime Museum. Visit www.wisconsinmaritime.org/submarines/uss-cobia for more information.
An overhead bunk provides just enough room for a thin enlisted man.
Bunks for enlisted crew members are over some of the two-dozen torpedos stowed on the World War II submarine USS Cobia.
A special toilet is required to accomplish flushing while underwater. It's said to have taken some training to use it successfully. Visit www.usni.org/magazines/naval-history-magazine/2008/october/those-stout-manitowoc-boats for more information.
An overhead bunk above a torpedo provides rest space for some of the 72 enlisted men on the submarine USS Cobia. Because submarines operate around the clock, crew members would 'hot cot' or share bunks so there were just enough for the off-duty crewmen.
The business end of a torpedo is pointed at one of the tubes through which it would be launched at enemy vessels.
A ladder leads to an overhead hatch. The hatches needed to be tightly sealed to avoid leaks when the submarine submerged. The submarines built at Manitowoc were designed to dive to a depth of at least 300 feet.
An array of valves and gauges populate a crew station. Visit navsource.org/archives/08/pdf/0838001.pdf for more information.
A food-preparation area doubles as mess, or eating space. All space on a submarine is used, more than once if possible.
A compact office complete with a typewriter awaits the vessel's clerk.
Wheels turn valves that control ballast to change the submarine's depth.
Junior-officer quarters had less-cramped overhead space in sleeping areas. There were eight officers serving with 72 enlisted personnel on the submarines built during World War II in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
Controls and gauges enable the Officer of the Deck or the Captain to control the vessel.
Red light reflects from the floor in the interior of the USS Cobia.
Manifolds curve up from the floor beneath wheels that control valves.
A lathe is tucked into a recess along the hull. Repairs needed to be made while underway because submarines traveled alone to the far reaches of the oceans.
Propellers of a training torpedo appear ready to propel the projectile.
A series of gauges show the status of generators and batteries. The batteries supplied power to keep the crew alive; the submarine operated silently while submerged to elude enemy depth charges.
A cover hangs open to reveal the inside of a torpedo tube in the USS Cobia. Torpedos were launched at enemy vessels through the tubes.
A memorial honors the men and women who constructed the 28 submarines built by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company, as well as the submariners who took the vessels to war. It stands at the Manitowoc Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
