Winter is the season of feeding cattle across the Northern Great Plains. For Dennis and Mykal Kirkpatrick, who ranch on the banks of the Big Hole River between the rural towns of Wisdom and Wise River, Mont., the soundtrack of their morning feeding routine is hooves on barnwood floors and oats being munched, because to this day, the Kirkpatrick family still chooses to feed their 400-head cow herd using the original horsepower.
