SHERIDAN, Mont. – Anyone who raises cattle knows about the purgatory period that comes in the days leading up to the start of calving. It’s a hurry-up-and-wait period. There is too much going on to leave the ranch or start other projects, but not enough going on to call it “full-blown” calving, yet. The Mehlhoff family is squarely in this vortex as they wait for their first bunch of cows to start calving – the ceremonial start to the four busiest months of their production year.
