URBANA, Ill. – A new, taller wheat variety designed for hardiness and for the organic market has been certified, and was introduced to the public Sept. 14.
New wheat variety introduced to organic grain growers
Frederic Kolb, University of Illinois plant breeder, introduces organic growers, chefs and others to the newly certified Eirsman organic red, soft winter wheat variety that has been developed at the University of Illinois with the help of Illinois farmers, researchers and wheat organizations over the last 10 years. Seated to his left in blue is Harold Wilkens who grew the crop on his northern Illinois farm in recent years and is growing more seed to be available commercially in 2018.
