URBANA, Ill. – A new, taller wheat variety designed for hardiness and for the organic market has been certified, and was introduced to the public Sept. 14.

Riggs Beer Company in Urbana Illinois is also growing the new Erisman soft red winter wheat variety. It’s a great variety for malting, Darin Riggs, brewery vice president said.
Frederic Kolb, University of Illinois plant breeder, introduces organic growers, chefs and others to the newly certified Eirsman organic red, soft winter wheat variety that has been developed at the University of Illinois with the help of Illinois farmers, researchers and wheat organizations over the last 10 years. Seated to his left in blue is Harold Wilkens who grew the crop on his northern Illinois farm in recent years and is growing more seed to be available commercially in 2018.
Erisman wheat, developed by University of Illinois staff led by Fred Kolb, received its certification as a new variety and will likely be available to farmers to grow originally by 2018.
