SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — As long as farmers keep selling heifers at the rate they are now, it will still be a while until the cattle herd rebuilding starts, says Derrell Peel.
Oklahoma State University livestock marketing specialist Derrell Peel says building the cattle herd in the U.S. is going to start slowly and last longer than rebuilding in 2014. He expects prices to stay high for two to four years.
Knowing current and longer-term marketing trends helps farmers like Todd Jokisch make some decisions on their operations. He was among those attending the Illinois KQB Cow-Calf Forum Nov. 8.
