SHOSHONE • Despite what could have been a dangerous mishap in poles on Friday night, Katelyn Perkins was able to stay calm and recover well enough to put together another solid performance enabling her to maintain the top position in the all-around standings.“The all-around is on your mind even when you try for it not to be because the competition this year is good,” said the Geneva sophomore. “I still just try to focus on me and my events and go with it. Being the leader makes it easier to make a solid run then to have to go after it. You are always trying to do the best and to go with what you can do.”Perkins said it is the skill level of the competitors, not the age, that really makes a difference in rodeo. She tells rookies that there is always another rodeo and competition. You still have to go out and make a good run., she said.Regarding the Friday night incident between Perkins and her horse, Skobbie took in poles, Perkins simply said, “He is old and doesn’t like the deep dirt or when it is hot.”Her favorite events involve roping, especially breakaway which she won both nights in Shoshone. She was 4.94 seconds on Friday but was more than a second better at 3.71 on Saturday. The wins kept her solidly in the top spot in the event. Perkins and her horse, Roxy, and her team roping partner, Michael Humbach from Jerome, had a second place finish on Saturday and are currently seventh in the standings. She rides Max for goats (an event she frowns on and utters “ugh” when it is mentioned) and breakaway.Perkins says Max is good for these events because, “He just likes to run by.”Even in goats, which she says is her least favorite, the talented cowgirl holds a slight lead over Anna Bahe from Gooding. She and Skeeter occupy second place in barrels behind Kynsee Mussman from Valley. For the weekend, Perkins gained a total of 56.50 points giving her a total of 170.50. Besides her finishes in breakaway and team roping, she finished third in barrels, tied for third with Kali Castle from Bellevue on Friday and added a fourth in goats on Saturday, and had a sixth in poles. Gooding senior, Bailey Gough is second with 165 after adding 54 points and Anna Bahe of Gooding is third with 104.Gooding cowboy Jed Pierson continued his winning ways as he added two more bareback rides to his resume with a 55-point ride on Friday and an even better ride on Saturday earning a reward of 61 points. With the two wins in bareback and a first on Saturday in team roping with Gooding teammate, Johnny Varin Pavkov, Pierson has a total of 99 points giving him a one-point edge over the 98 held by Cody Ruby from Grantsville, Ut. Ruby had a win in saddle bronc and a fifth and sixth in calf roping.Cody Craig from Wendell was the fastest in calf roping at 12.56 in calf roping on Friday in calf roping and was even better at 12.10-seconds on Saturday.Ty Hatch from Richfield captured his first win in bull riding after turning in a 68-point ride.5th District is in Carey on May 1-2 with Friday performance at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.(Schools/cities of competitors of District V—Bellevue, Carey, Elco, Dietrich, Fairfield, Geneva, Glenns Ferry, Gooding, Grantsville, UT., Hailey, Jerome, King Hill, Meridian, Mountain Home, Murtaugh, Richfield, Shoshone, Valley, Wendell, Wood River)April 24, 2015 ResultsBareback riding: 1.
