It was a town north of Milwaukee where if travelers blinked they would probably have missed it. James Gifford purchased land on the edge of clay bluffs along the shore of Lake Michigan about 15 years before the start of the American Civil War. The settlement was named Ulao; it was later renamed Port Ulao. It was in what is now the town of Grafton in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin.
