A small Norwegian church on the Minnesota-South Dakota border has a connection to several significant events in Midwestern history, and over its 140-plus years, it has made a mark of its own in the surrounding communities and in the lives of its members.

The sanctuary at Singsaas Lutheran features curved pews and a floor sloped toward the altar. The altar painting of Jesus on the cross is by a noted female artist who made hundreds of such paintings in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Singsaas Lutheran Church near Hendricks, Minn., is surrounded by a church-owned field that members plant and harvest each year. A plot is reserved for Sunday school kids to grow pumpkins for their fall festival.

The current Singsaas Lutheran Church building near Hendricks, Minn., was constructed in 1921. The congregation was started by Norwegian immigrants whose names are carved in a stone pyramid in front of the church.
