I think we have gone more than a week without a rain for the first time in more than a month. We have been catching up on spraying and fungicide work. This crop looks pretty good from the road, but I encourage guys to get out and walk fields. This pollination issue everyone has been talking about is real, and it seems to be everywhere in varying degrees. If I had to guess, I would say around here we have lost 10-15% off the top. I have seen some ears from neighbors’ who plant a different brand that’s effected more like 25-30%. Just like the early corn, the early soybeans look good, but it does seem like the pod count is way less than it should be for this stage of growth. Hopefully it’s in our head and they are just podding late. The big replant window on late corn around here is just starting to tassel. Still a ton of risk for that corn — heat for pollination, dry weather for grain fill and probably the biggest threat is frost. Sadly, none of it really matters with grain prices where they are. All we can do is pray about all of it.
