The World Organization for Animal Health confirmed an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in cattle March 6 in Hungary. The last reported case of foot and mouth disease in Hungary occurred Dec. 31,1973. That is following a previous case of foot and mouth disease reported Jan. 10 in Germany. Hungary has not seen a case of foot and mouth disease in 50 years, and Germany has not had a case in 40 years. The United States has not experienced a case of foot and mouth disease since 1929, but the Hungary and Germany experiences remind all livestock producers in the United States that foot and mouth disease is still a threat to livestock operations.
