Alone and silently stoic, Como Rural School still stands in Como Township, Hand County, since its closure in 2002.
Closed in 2002, Como Rural School is nestled on the prairie between the Crow Creek Reservation to the west and sparsely settled ranches to the east.

Ramona Ufen taught kindergarten through third grade at Como Rural School in 1987-1988 when this story was originally written for graduate course at the University of South Dakota. “Teaching at Como involved hard work, mixed-in with laughter and fun memories,” she said.
