Regents to lawmakers: The cuts are too deep, the public authority model needs more study, and shared governance and tenure must be preserved.
"They don’t need to look any further than the East Wing of the State Capitol," Sen. Jennifer Shilling, D-La Crosse, said in a statement.
Chancellor Rebecca Blank said the cuts announced Friday will start to help bridge but not fill the budget hole.
The UW Board of Regents vowed to push back against the proposed budget cuts and correct misconceptions about how the schools function.
The governor is proposing a $300 million cut in exchange for more autonomy for the 26-campus system.
The state's biennial budget may not be finalized until May or June.
