Kansas was one of a few selected states that recently tested a new drop corral trap. In this photo, feral swine have been baited with corn into the trap’s perimeter. When the operator confirms that the entire sounder has entered the trap, they trigger the trap to drop to the ground via a cell phone app.
After 16 years of removing more than 10,000 feral swine, Kansas has mitigated its population to just two areas in the state, highlighted in red. Kansas Wildlife Services estimates these regions combined represent a current population of less than 1,000 feral swine.

Through trail cameras mounted high above the drop corral trap, operators can safely view the animals to take a head count. Wildlife biologist Curran Salter said it can take weeks, even months, to catch an entire sounder, but it’s the most effective way to eliminate feral swine from repopulating.
