ST. LOUIS — The Mississippi River water level is unusually low for the third straight year, forcing barge companies to put limits on how much cargo they can carry and cutting into farm profits.

Barges pushed by a towboat make their way down the Mississippi River near the Wisconsin shore. A barge can carry 1,500 tons, the equivalent of 15 railroad freight cars or 60 semi-tractor trailers.
