Several months ago I used the word variable to describe the weather and crops in our area and that is the best word to describe the harvest this fall. We finished our soybeans with below-average yields, yet other producers have told us anything from disappointing to really good bean yields considering how dry it has been. The corn harvest is even more variable with some still waiting for the corn to dry below 20% so they can harvest, to others with moistures in the 12% and 13% range. Some producers are reporting probably second-best yields on record to others with corn only yielding average. I know of several producers who have completed harvest, and many will finish this week or next. We are just over halfway through our corn harvest. The old saying that rain in July makes corn and rain in August makes beans truly reflects our harvest this year. We have received less than 1.5 inches of rain since Aug. 1 after record May and June rains. We need rain.
