For some grain farmers, diversification can mean growing soybeans and raising cattle. For others, it involves planting crops and trees side by side.
Specialist sees agroforestry gaining ground
A 20-acre plot managed by the Savanna Institute incorporates windbreaks along with alley cropping including hazelnut, serviceberry, gooseberry, willow, oak and black walnut trees. It is enrolled in USDA’s Conservation Reserve Program.
