STODDARD, Wis. – Second-generation farmer Tim Servais of Hamburg Hills Farm near Stoddard followed in his dad’s footsteps into farming — and applying conservation practices to the land.

Tim Servais, who dairy farms organically near Stoddard, Wisconsin, is a second-generation farmer who is working with the Natural Resources Conservation Service on conservation measures in order to better the farmland he's hoping his children will one day operate.

Contour strips, like the ones shown here at Hamburg Hills Farm operated by Vernon County dairy producers Tim and Lisa Servais, help prevent sheet and rill erosion by slowing runoff and trapping sediment. Sediment and nutrients are removed from the runoff as they pass through buffer strips.
