While the blizzards that struck North Dakota and the Midwest with a vengeance are in the past, the impacts may be far-reaching for many producers. Calf-death losses are only part of the picture because ranchers are now faced with potentially large numbers of cows that will not be raising a calf this year. In addition many of those cows may be in less-than-ideal condition due to poor-quality feeds and feed shortages due to one or more years of drought.
