Over the past couple of weeks, many soybean fields have experienced challenging conditions from soil crusting shortly after planting to more recent hail events. The result has been uneven emergence, and, in some cases, plant populations are at less than what was originally targeted. As conversations turn to replanting decisions, it is important to remember that soybeans have a remarkable ability to compensate for reduced plant populations.

Soybean grain yield and seeding rate relationship is relayed across six site-years in Iowa. Vertical dashed lines indicate the agronomic optimum seeding rate and 95 percent confidence intervals. The response value at the agronomic optimum seeding rate is reported as the associated predicted response. Goodness of fit is summarized by the conditional coefficient of determination -- R² -- and the root mean squared error.
