August is the optimal timing for late-summer alfalfa plantings in the Midwest, and specifically in Ohio. The Ohio Agronomy Guide recommends planting dates between Aug. 1 and Aug. 15 for northern Ohio, and planting dates between Aug. 1 and Aug. 30 for southern Ohio. The differences in those planting timeframes are primarily due to the later timing of first frosts in southern Ohio because a frost before successful root system establishment will limit any new seeding’s ability to overwinter.
