As some readers recall, I never tire of learning the history behind the area’s houses and structures made of fieldstone. Last October Kirk and I attended a relative’s wedding in Gunderson Park outside of Centerville, S.D. The rock pillars of an erstwhile grape arbor were the backdrop for the ceremony, with bridesmaids in autumn-orange frocks. I asked two of the children in the wedding party, Wyatt Plendl and his sister Oakley of Le Mars, Iowa, to pose at the stone fence near a stone fireplace once used for cooking picnic meals.
