RED CLIFF, Wis. – We often hear about the world going to h^&* in a handbasket. Commentators and politicians wring their hands, spreading doom and gloom. They talk of young people leaving rural areas, saying those rural areas have poverty and unemployment, and lack emergency services and nutritious food. Some say nothing can be done about climate change and other environmental problems while others pretend they don’t exist. The problems seem to multiply to fill the 24-hour news cycles and to satisfy the insatiable hunger for website content. Some wonder what, if anything, can be done. Others say the end to civilization is near.
