Our nation has seen the demise of important species in the past due to human activity. Passenger Pigeons, American Bison and American Chestnuts were all species of economic importance that were once found in abundance. The pigeons and bison were over-hunted until the pigeons were extinct and the bison almost so. The American Chestnut, estimated to have had a population of about 4 billion trees east of the Mississippi River, was devastated by a blight imported from Asia. By the middle of the 20th century the chestnut, an important source of wood and food, was a rarity. It remains so.
