COLUMBIA, Mo. — One hundred thirty years ago, the University of Missouri established Sanborn Field as an agricultural research area, beginning generations of study on crops and forages.

Sanborn Field has some plots that have been planted continuously in corn and wheat since 1888. Other plots have three- and four-year rotations.
A soil sample from this test plot was used to develop the antibiotic aureomycin, which treated a variety of illnesses. A soil sample from the plot is in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C.
