ROCK PORT, Mo. — The crops were drying down in the rolling hills of Atchison County, Missouri, on a sunny fall day with a light breeze. Most fields in this area reflect the undulating topography of the region, farming along the contours and with widespread use of terraces. Some fields have swaths of crops separated by nearly vertical grass terraces, resulting in steps of cropland ascending up hillsides.
