Jimena Laporta Sanchis wants to help dairy cows beat the heat. She's an associate professor of lactation physiology at the University of Wisconsin-Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences.
Professor wants cows to chill out
University of Wisconsin professor Jimena Laporta Sanchis studies the molecular biology of dairy cattle to see how stress from temperatures warmer than 70 degrees can have a negative impact on them and their ability to produce milk. Tissue and blood samples inform her of whether cows are heat-stressed. If so, they could produce as much as 30% less milk as a result.
The office of University of Wisiconsin professor Jimena Laporta Sanchis has a theme -- cows. Pictures of them hang on her office wall and numerous figurines 'graze' on her desk. Her work revolves around keeping dairy cattle healthy and preventing heat stress from having a negative impact on their reproductive systems and milk production.
