Indigenous people in North America organized and formed governments thousands of years before Europeans arrived. Some Native American Nations had democratic principles that were incorporated into the Constitution of the United States. With such long experience in self-government, it’s no wonder that Native American Nations in North America continue to develop institutions that ensure their own self-government and sovereignty.
