Maria and Ron Rosmann of Rosmann Family Farms near Harlan, Iowa, began using organic practices in the 1980s and have implemented several conservation practices on their farm. Ron Rosmann will talk about farming in a changing climate at the MOSES Organic Farming Conference, Feb. 21-23 in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
Ron Rosmann is one of the founding members of Practical Farmers of Iowa. He began doing on-farm trials in the 1980s, and has hosted numerous field days at Rosmann Family Farms.
The Rosmanns have about 100 Red Angus cows. They feed and finish calves for their private-label beef business as well as for the Organic Prairie cooperative.
Ron Rosmann says he disturbs soil on his Iowa farm as little as possible. Ridge-tillage on corn and soybeans helps, he says, because it’s a no-till situation until the planter sweeps the ridge at planting time.
To provide protein for their hogs, the Rosmanns buy some organic soy meal. But they’ve reduced those purchases significantly with their own grain mix of oats, wheat, barley and field peas. The mix provides about an 18-percent protein level.
Maria Rosmann operates Farm Sweet Farm, an on-farm store offering the farm’s certified-organic meats as well as other local products.

Ellen Walsh-Rosmann also operates a “farm-to-table” marketing and delivery business that buys and distributes foods from area farmers across Iowa and Nebraska.
“Farming in a Changing Climate” will be one of 60 workshops featured at the upcoming Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Organic Farming Conference. The event will be held Feb. 21-23 in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
