“I was once told that the leaves on a cottonwood tree need to be the size of a squirrel’s ear in order to begin corn planting. Although the leaves have not appeared on the cottonwoods yet, I did see some operations begin planting around May 15,” Crop Watcher Shawn Freeland reported from his Caputa ranch in western South Dakota.
