The city located in section eight, township 98, range 39 in
Osceola County, Iowa, was platted in 1880 as Lexington, Iowa.
Shortly after a publication was printed advertising for businesses,
families and individuals to settle there, it was discovered that
there was already a Lexington in Iowa. Frederick Mayer, one of the
founding fathers, offered the first three letters of his last name
to become the city's first name. Thus, May City, Iowa, was
born.
