UPHAM, N.D. – Out in their canola fields, Chance Kitzman and his dad, Shawn, began harvesting their crop on Monday, Sept. 8, with the crop at the right moisture level for cutting. Shawn operated his Deere combine while Chance’s brother operated the second Deere combine and Chance drove the grain cart – just as he did with oat harvest.
Kitzman canola harvest delayed due to wet conditions in September
Chance Kitzman empties canola from the grain cart to the truck with a grain cart’s auger tht tilts up and down so "you can kind of set in right into the truck. It’s pretty handy, and it allows the canola to easily go into the truck. In fact, the auger goes down about 2-3 feet above our shortest trailer and the auger dips up for other trailers, so it’s pretty nice."
Since Chance Kitzman hasn't been able to combine, he has been working in the shop on a few projects. Chance bought a 485 Versatile tractor, and it needed some maintenance. “It just needs a few little bearings and some hydraulic couplers and other small stuff,” he said. “Hopefully, if the weather straightens up, we will use it to get some harrowing and discing done this fall."
