Our farm received 1.86 inches of rain during May which leaves us about 3.5 inches short since Jan. 1. We finished spraying post corn herbicide this week and need some moisture to activate the residual herbicides. Before the days of herbicides, the saying for corn was “knee high by the 4th of July.” Now with better hybrids and earlier planting we say “knee high by the June 4, head high by the 4th of July.” Our corn and soybeans got off to a good start and several fields of corn were knee high by June 1. We will need timely rains through the summer to finish the crop.
