Greenhouse owner Jim Gathje puts in long farmer hours, especially in the spring. The Saturday before Mother's Day is the busiest. But while harvest is finished for most growers, Gathje is double-cropping -- carefully tending poinsettias.

Poinsettias are short-day plants that turn color as days grow shorter. When poinsettias are purchased this time of year, they're actually finished growing. Thus plants won't benefit from fertilizer, but just require maintenance watering.

Poinsettias come in unusual forms, including one with what resembles large rose-like blooms. The bracts persist after other poinsettias have perished, meaning people will still be enjoying the plant in February or even longer.
