Trump Says US Needs Greenland, In Renewed Push For The Territory
US President Donald Trump has renewed his campaign to acquire Greenland, appointing a special envoy to the territory, who he says will “lead the charge.” Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as his special envoy to Greenland, a territory that the president says the US needs for national security. “We need Greenland for national security, not for minerals... If you take a look at Greenland, you look up and down the coast, you have Russian and Chinese ships all over the place,” Trump said. Trump’s renewed push has been criticized by Denmark and Greenland, which is a self-governing Danish territory. In a joint statement, their prime ministers said that “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders,” adding, “You cannot annex another country. Not even with an argument about international security.” Landry expressed enthusiasm toward the idea on social media platform X, saying that “it’s an honor to serve… in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the US.” Since his return to office in January, Trump has reignited his longstanding interest in the territory, citing its strategic location and mineral wealth. Trump has not ruled out the use of force to achieve control over the island, which has shocked Denmark, a NATO ally that has traditionally held close ties with Washington. Greenland, with around 57,000 residents, has had broad self-governance since 1979, but defense and foreign policy remain Denmark's responsibilities.
