AmeriCorps members have been coordinating the Schools of Hope tutoring project in Madison elementary schools since 1998. This year's crew has been training the last 10 days at schools and at Centro Hispano in Madison. Classes begin Tuesday for many Madison students.

The community effort, launched in 1995, focuses primarily on trying to reduce the racial achievement gap in Madison schools.
Hundreds more applicants were passed along to the interview stage, giving principals more choices.
