Harvest finishes three weeks earlier in Northeast Iowa
DELAWARE, Iowa — With harvest wrapping up quickly for Robert Wendt and his brother Dave, there might be a little time to relax.
“I want to go on vacation,” Wendt said. “Last year we finished Nov. 4, this year we are done Oct. 12. When it’s ready, we are ready. You never know what’s going to happen with the weather. This has been ideal harvesting conditions.”
HULL, Iowa — Harvest is moving right along for John Tiedeman and his neighbors.
“We probably have four days left,” he said Oct. 14. “I would say we’re 80-90% done. We had anywhere from an inch to 3 inches of rain (Oct. 11-12), but we were back in the field a couple days later. That’s the only delay we’ve had.”
Drought trims corn, soybean yields in West Central Iowa
SCHLESWIG, Iowa — A dry summer likely cut into Brian Sieren’s yields this year.
Sieren, who farms near here in Crawford County, said soybean yields are 8 to 10 bushels per acre less than last year, while corn yields are substantially down as well.
STANHOPE, Iowa — Jeff Hill takes a moment to bask in the sunshine after stepping out of the cab of his combine.
It has been that kind of fall, with few rainy days and plenty of sunshine in Central Iowa, a welcome change after last year’s muddy harvest. Of course, at times this year has been a bit too sunny and not nearly muddy enough.
LISBON, Iowa — When looking at the 2020 harvest in East Central Iowa, farmer Dave Siggin focused on the positive first.
Siggin said he has been thrilled with his soybean harvest, seeing yields anywhere from 60-70 bushels per acre this season. Corn, however, has been a different story.
DANVILLE, Iowa — Harvest has been plodding along for John Woodruff. The Des Moines County farmer said despite some drier conditions this year, it’s been a pretty normal season overall.
“We just got beans done (Oct. 10),” Woodruff said. “Beans were average, corn has been good so far. It’s actually been a pretty good year.”
