By Oct. 12, the Southwest Iowa farmer was nearly done with beans but had about 700 acres of corn yet to harvest.
WASHINGTON, Iowa — The yield monitor was giving good reports for Michael Vittetoe as he ran his combine through his Washington County field in early October.
Vittetoe was moving through a field of non-GMO corn, and despite a dry second half of the year, yields were staying high, averaging between 230 and 240 bushels per acre.
GARNAVILLO, Iowa — Average rainfall was just what the doctor ordered for Northeast Iowa farmer Ryan Oberbroeckling.
The Clayton County, Iowa, farmer said getting just the right amount of rain in his area is producing positive results through the first weeks of harvest.
WINTERSET, Iowa — Vince Jackson was just getting started on the 2022 harvest during a perfect fall afternoon on Oct. 4.
“I’m really just starting today,” Jackson said, as he steered his combine through a Madison County soybean field. “I don’t know yet what the yields will be, but I know we didn’t get enough rain in this area.”
WOODWARD, Iowa — This was a challenging year in the field in Iowa, according to Sam Spellman, who farms with his son, Aaron, near Woodward in Dallas County.
“We were late planting,” Spellman explained Oct. 7. “And right now moisture levels are all over the board.”
PRIMGHAR, Iowa — Northwest Iowa farmers were hard at work harvesting corn Oct. 12.
“The beans are pretty much done, and most are getting going with corn,” Dennis Heemstra said. He farms near Primghar in O’Brien County, Iowa.
BREDA, Iowa — Harvest 2022 has seen relatively smooth sailing for Alyce and Aaron Nieland.
“We were talking that this was the smoothest bean harvest we’ve had, and corn has been pretty smooth as well,” Alyce said Oct. 13. “We got 0.60 inches of rain Tuesday night, but we were back at it this morning.”
CLARENCE, Iowa — Curt Peterson was thinking of what could have been when combining a corn field near Clarence, Iowa, in early October.
The East Central Iowa farmer said he lost nearly 10% of his potential yield after a storm came through in July and caused a significant amount of green snap.
LATIMER, Iowa — Josh Krabbe is feeling a bit lucky this year. While this is not a bin-buster of a crop, it is better than those being harvested in some other parts of the state, and Krabbe is feeling thankful for that.
“I’m happy with it,” Krabbe said as he steered his combine through a soybean field near Latimer.
