Farming is a way of life for Connor Keithley, and showing pigs helped him get into another sector of agriculture.

His successful livestock exhibiting career, which has included four times participating in the Missouri State Fair Sale of Champions for showing the grand champion or reserve grand champion, has led to another aspect of his diversified farming operation.

SHANNON, Ill. — Darrell Stitzel’s grandparents moved to a farm in Carroll County in northwestern Illinois 65 years ago. His wife Laurie’s father started his career as a tenant farmer in South Dakota. Together, the couple has grown a thriving pork business while also being active in their community.

They were recognized this year at the Illinois State Fair as the 2022 Illinois Pork Producer Farm Family of the Year.

MANILLA, Iowa — Jerry and Nancy Croghan grew up around pigs, so it should come as no surprise that the couple remains a part of the pork industry.

“I’ve just always liked it,” Jerry says. “There’s always something to do, and there is always something you can do better.”

The push toward renewable diesel could spur changes in hog rations.

Bob Thaler, Extension swine specialist with South Dakota State University, says the increasing demand for the fuel has resulted in more soybean acres and fewer corn acres.

SHANNON, Ill. — Whether it’s a field meal at harvest, a wedding banquet for 400 people or a caring casserole for a friend, Laurie Stitzel knows how to make it.

“My mom was a wonderful cook. I learned at her knee,” Stitzel said.
