DEFOREST, Wis. – Vern Treinen started composting bedding pack about 10 years ago at his heifer-raising farm near DeForest. Managing from 150 to as many as 180 heifers and doing the bulk of his farmwork alone, he looked for ways to reduce his labor load. He decided to try composting. By establishing compost piles on a pad near his barns, he saved time and labor by not needing to haul manure to the fields, he said. He also discovered that since he’s been applying compost, he’s reduced input costs and improved soil health.
