U.S. dairy producers are increasingly leveraging science's power to optimize the genetic potential of their herd for milk production, animal health and operational efficiency. Since genomic testing became commercially available in 2008, over 8 million U.S. dairy animals have been genotyped for dozens of key genetic traits related to milk production and quality, feed efficiency, reproductive viability and cow health.

Corey Geiger is lead economist for dairy production and processing in CoBank’s Knowledge Exchange research division. He was elected the 65th president of Holstein Association USA and serves on the board of directors for the World Dairy Expo. He owns a portion of his six-generation family farm in Wisconsin; he holds bachelor’s degrees in dairy science and agricultural economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
