Deer have entered a period of greatest activity – the annual rutting behavior from Oct. 25 to Nov. 10 – according to a recent Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources research study in southwest Wisconsin. The activity of roaming, running and wandering greatly increases chances of a buck or doe walking under a deer stand, being seen in a back yard, running in cattle pastures or even in grocery-store aisles, or across a highway center line. Instead of a buck appearing 300 yards away, the deer may be within 30 feet – with little concern for a human with a crossbow, camera or binoculars. Those who are hunting before and through the rut are more likely to connect with a buck than a doe, but often the two are together.
